Who Has A Newsletter??? MEEEEE

Hello everyone! Well, you all know that things around my house have been INSANE, but the last few days I have gotten to write which feels soooo good and I got to play with my website. I still want to redesign the home page but for months I have been trying to get a newsletter going. Well, I am so thrilled, beyond thrilled. I mean I didn’t feel this excited when I sold my first book! But I now have a newsletter! If you go to my website, scroll to the bottom of the page you will see I now have a newsletter, just click the little button and I also have a yahoo group.

I am also working on a widget to post all my upcoming blogs and guest bloggers. During the month of October I will be hosting several authors for guest blogs. If you want to come by and talk about just about anything please shoot me an email at sayde@saydegrace.com Also my editor says that I should have my next cowboy release from The Wilder Rose Press in December, you all know what that means???? Cowboy Christmas!! Yay!

All right, I do have a few topics to talk about today. First there are a few things that get me choked up which we are going to discuss. One, every time the national anthem is played I get a little teary eyed. Second, anything to do with animals inspiring us or stuff like that. Third, acts of humanity. When I say this one, I mean when people do things for others without expecting or needing a reward.

The last week the Sizzlers have mentioned several times that our good friend and RWA chapter mate, author Cynthia Eden and several other authors have published Entangled, an anthology which benefits breast cancer research.

I love hearing about goodwill stories. This got me thinking about the things that I would do if I had the ability. In my local community the poverty rate is high. I am a very, very fortunate person to have the finacial  stability(although I question my money worries sometimes) to be able to provide for my children. My husband works extremely hard, and I try to work just as hard. We are lucky to have the jobs and connections that we do. However, not all the people we know do. I wish that I had the ability and funding to start a food bank in my area. We are ten miles from one small town and twelve from another. This doesn’t seem like much to most of us, but there are a lot of people who cringe when they are faced with purchasing fuel to make those miles. Also there are a great number of elderly in the community. I would love to be able to help them too. If I could, I’d serve a meal a day for all in need. It’s a dream of mine that no person go to bed hungry. I know we spend hundreds, millions of dollars to provide for the unfortunate overseas, but I’d really like to see the people in my community provided for also.

As a writer I take a special interest in the library at my children’s school. The librarian brought it to my attention that she receives NO funding for new books. That means that once a book is lost or damaged she has no funds to replace it. Thank god for PTO and donations from businesses and other generous people. I have started buying one book each time I go to the dollar store or Books A Million. Donating those books gives each child a book to take home and share with his/her parents and bring them closer.

So today when you all go out to shop, work, or run errands pick up a few extra items to donate to your local food bank. And if you have a local school, why not donate a book, it doesn’t have to be new, just not damaged. Take inspiration from authors like all the ones participating in Entangled and pass the goodwill to others. Remember that no matter how bad your situation is someone else is suffering far more than you in one way or another.

Go forth and be productive folks. And if you’re interested in being a guest blogger in October on my blog, send me an email at sayde@saydegrace.com

Reopening for The New Year

Ok, so I’m not reopening because I actually want to. Nope, I’m sick and I have a billion things I need to do here at my house. I’m reopening because I got my edits for my urban fantasy that I sold to Siren Publishing. It never fails to amaze me the things that editors catch or want to change. I’m a little scared this time because there are some things that my editor wants to change about “me” and I’m not totally on board yet. I just read through the suggestions and edits which means I’m still digesting.

This brings me to a point that I believe every writer, either beginner or best seller, should remember. No matter how many times you are published it never guarantees a sale with NO EDITS. Well, maybe if your Nora Roberts but I imagine even she gets edits from her editor. But honestly it never gets easier to see a manuscript that you’ve sold and you think the editor loves, come back to you with edits that make your ms look like a Christmas tree. And it also brings up another point, all publishing houses are different.

At one of my publishers(ok so I only have two but still I can say this now 🙂 ) I’m sent my ms back to fix any grammar errors. Once those are done I am sent plot problems. Once those are finished I’m sent a copy of it in publication form. That copy is one that I go through and make sure everything is exactly like I want it. Then once I send that back I’m done and we just wait for a publication date.

My new publisher sent me all of the above in one document! WOW, seriously different and today I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. I had to laugh though as one of the comments that I read so far was that I should use more contractions 🙂 I think Jillian will get a huge kick out of that one! Besides that there are a lot of little stuff. Stuff that I am going, how the hell did these people read this and actually like it? And I got a comment that has me scratching my head and once the CP is not dizzy sick, Rebecca will be getting a headache from trying to figure it out too.

There you have it, I’m back open today and I’m a little freaked out. But hey, I’m lucky to be published and luckier to have another book on its way to publication so I’ll stop fussing.

And to follow a little of Danica Avet’s blog today I’d like to tell you all that I too am so very grateful of another year in the company of such outstanding writers and even better friends. Thank you to all my southern sizzle ladies, my terrific critique partner, Rebecca Zanetti, who is going to be busy busy this year with her own best-selling books as well as critiquing more of my junk, to all the ladies at Gulf Coast Chapter of RWA who inspire me to try writing in every genre out there in hopes that I can as good as they are, and to Danica Avet for being such a wonderful person who helped me at Nationals when things back home took a bad turn while I was gone  and also to my readers who have blessed me with sell after sell and I’m indebted to you all for your kindness. There are so many other people to thank for being there for me but I’ve rambled on and need to stop. Thank you all, and may your upcoming year be better and blessed 🙂

Thanks so much

Author Bianca Swan!!!

Hello everyone! Today I’m thrilled to have erotic romance author Bianca Swan here to blog with us. Please join me in welcoming her. Also I’m a popular lady today and am guest blogging at http://brindlechase.blogspot.com/2010/11/flirtatious-friday-on-tuesday-w-sayde.html with author Brindle Chase who will be a guest here soon. And I’m over on Rachel Leigh’s blog who guest blogged with us a few weeks ago http://rachelleighromance.blogspot.com/

Now lets get to wonderful author Bianca Swan and her new release :)!!

From the time I was a child, I loved horses—always thought every little box under the Christmas tree was a note saying that there was a pony tied outside.  Didn’t happen until I was 13 then not at Christmas just the miracle in July.  My first large pony was named First Fling, a black-and-white paint.

For several years, my husband (now ex) and I bred and showed Arabians.  They are lovely animals and I enjoyed my gelding Foxfire Baron, took him to The Nationals in costume, and had a superb time.  Then I discovered the Andalusian—the Horse of Kings and the bullfighting horse of Spain.  Also, a key ingredient in the original breeding of the Lipizzaner of Spanish Riding School fame.

I met my soul mate (on four feet) in the shape of a gorgeous 4 year-old stallion named Bonito, imported from Costa Rica, and a lot more talented horse than I was a rider.  I spent the next few years catching up, but I wouldn’t take anything for the experience.  Andalusians are very talented for the Airs Above the Ground  and I found myself wiping the red dirt of South Carolina off my hinny more times than I’d like to admit.

The Andalusian horse plays a strong supporting role in Hot Spanish Nights.  I’d always wanted to write a book about the horse I loved, was intrigued with their role in the bullring, and The Wild Rose Press offered me the opportunity with their erotic line Destination Desire.

However!  Once I started working with the editor the story grew beyond the line’s word length.  I must thank Trish Owens of TWRP for guiding me along the path to becoming a writer of erotic romance.  I was (and still am) a writer of paranormal and urban fantasy romance, the latter of which Bianca has blended into her hot world in the form of a novella about a sweet, dynamic fallen angel named Cam-ael.

If anyone wants to ask a question about the Andalusian or bullfighting, though I am no expert, I have done some research on the latter.

Sayde and I share the love of horses.  I rode English, foxhunting and dressage.  She lives on the edge, riding super fast horses around barrels (I do that in cars—around cones).

Thank you, Sayde for letting me take over the spotlight.

The music in my trailer for Hot Spanish Nights is Espana Cani (The Gypsy Dance).  A spectacular dance, the Paso Doble, is often performed to this song.

The translation of Paso Doble is “Two Step”, not to be confused with “Paso a Dos” (Dance for Two). The name refers to the marching nature of the dance, counted one, two for Left, Right.  Paso Doble is also known as the “Spanish One Step” because only one step is taken to each beat of music.  The tempo of Paso Doble music is usually a brisk 60 beats per minute.

The following steps are distictive to the Paso Doble:

  • Sur Place (on the spot)
  • Separation
  • Attack
  • Huit
  • Open Promenade to Open Counter Promenade
  • Spanish Line
  • Promenade Close
  • Flamenco Taps

The Paso Doble portrays a bullfight to march-like music used for the procession at the beginning of the corrida.  The music is played during the bullfighters’ entrance (paseo) or during the passes (faena) just before the kill. The man is bullfighter and the lady is his cape in the drama of a Spanish bullfight.

The dancers take dramatic steps forward on the heels, adding artistic hand movements. The forward steps, or walks, are strong and proud. The Torero (male dancer) should incorporate apel, a move in which he stamps his foot, much like a matador strikes the ground in order to capture the bull’s attention of the bull. All dance moves should be sharp and quick, with the chest and head held high to represent arogance and dignity.

Gypsy Dance, the music in the Hot Spanish Nights trailer, is classic Paso Doble.

New Release

Hello everyone! Well, guess what??? The Harder They Buck was released with The Wilder Rose Press on Friday. Now I love to go to the Amazon site or to novelrank and check my sales for my books, and was a little disappointed when The Harder They Buck was not up on amazon. I emailed my editor to see how long it’d take, because you know I was checking novelrank like every two minutes! She explained that it’d take her a few days to get it on there but that if she were me she’d push buying from The Wild Rose Press. I usually do that anyway but I really wanted to see it on amazon. She went on to explain why it was so important for me to encourage people too buy direct. Why you ask? I”ll break it down in numbers 🙂

If Amazon buys your book at wholesale for $2.50 you get royalties from that price which at 35% is $.88. Now lets see what it’d be if you bought direct from the publisher. At full price your book may be $4.50 so you’d get 35% of that which is $1.58! WOW what a difference that is.

Also when buying ebooks read the formatting guidelines. You may not realize it but most all epublishers have a program you can download that is compatablie with you reader. Usually you will see a page that says “Which format to use?”. Give it a second before you decide you can’t buy from that publisher. Read the information given and try it. If it doesn’t work email the publisher and complain, most will understand(from my experience).

So now I give you The Harder They Bcuk 🙂

The Harder They Buck

WARNING: This book contains the use of whips, ropes, and handcuffs by one sexy cowboy looking to win the ride of his life.

Raised by parents who don’t believe in affection, Melanie Brantley developed a hard-edged outlook on life…and love. But then along comes a cowboy who makes her blood boil, and not only with anger. A fact that scares the hell out of her. Enough that she seeks solace at Minx, a club that caters to the more carnal pleasures.

After recovering from a bull ride gone wrong, Lance Wright is ready to move forward and he’s set his sights on Melanie. Her temper tells him all he needs to know about the passion he’d find in her bed. The wildcat fights him every step of the way, but she’s in for a surprise. The harder Melanie bucks, the more Lance wants to ride.

The alarm on Melanie’s cell phone vibrated, thank god. She’d stayed the hour and a half she’d promised. Time to get the heck outta here.

“Someone important?” Lance’s low voice whispered behind her.

Melanie tensed. She’d been just about to run for the hills. “Kinda. What do you want?” She turned and stared at him. His deep brown hair was half hidden under his black cowboy hat, and his long sleeved orange and white plaid shirt stood out in a sea of red and green shirts. His eyes danced with mischief, and she fought not to dance with them. One thing she did love was a guy to play with, and Lance was always ready to play.

“I’m glad you invited your sister up for the holidays. She’s nice. I was worried when Billie said she was coming up.” He smirked. “It’s hard enough around here with you, but I sure didn’t need another woman threatening me with bodily harm.”

“Leave my baby sister alone,” she nearly growled.

“Can’t do that—unless you’d like to take her place. It wouldn’t hurt my feelings a bit if you’d hold off on hurting me to go out with me, at least once.” He leaned close, his spicy cologne filling her nose and setting her on path to sure destruction. “All that passion you have, I can help you put it to good use.” He nipped her ear.

She wanted to lean into him, to press her body against his and do just what he’d said. Yes, she knew he’d use her passion to drive her to the brink of madness, and what was more, if she let him, she would drive herself further. There was something about Lance Wright that upped her emotions. Never before had a man stirred such hate and love. She’d always heard the line between love and hate was thinly veiled, and standing so close to Lance, feeling his body heat against hers, she knew it was the truth.

Thanks everyone and don’t forget to stop by Rebecca Zanetti’s blog where we are giving away three books on Friday! Leave a comment before Friday to enter to win!

Tuesday’s Industry News:Nathan Bransford’s Query Advice

Hello everyone! First let me say thank you to everyone who has said good things about Riding Double. I will be announcing the winner of my retweet contest and commenter contest today sometime.

All right onto today’s industry news topic: Queries. Oh how we love to hate them. I am sometimes referred to as the query queen or submission goddess(ok so I made that one up) because I usually don’t hesitate to hit that send button and release my newest baby to the world.  So today as I was surfing the web trying to decide on what my topic would be I found a nice blog post by agent Nathan Bransford. I’m getting back into query mode so it helps me to read blogs by agents/editors to see what is going on it their world and well Nathan Bransford is telling us all about queries.

Focus your query on the work you are currently shopping and devote the majority of the words in the query to it.

Sometimes when writers have experienced a taste of writing success they feel this is going to carry the day in a query and focus almost exclusively on those accomplishments.

For instance, all of these things are good, solid writing accomplishments that you should be proud of:

– being accepted to and/or graduating from an MFA program
– placing in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Competition
– placing short stories with prestigious journals
– being nominated for a Pushcart
– self-publishing and receiving praise from strangers

Congrats! Very well done. But none of these things, at least for me, are going to result in a partial request on their own, and I wouldn’t make these accomplishments the focal point of a query.

Even if someone had a great deal of success and had been published and sold a lot of copies, I still need to connect with the current project the author is shopping if we’re going to successfully work together. That current project is what I want to know about. It’s what I’m going to be basing my decision on.

Yes, mention your accomplishments, but your current project should be the star of the show.

Ok, I think this answers alot of questions I hear from people. Yes we can mention things but lets not make those the total focus. The story has to shine in the query or the other stuff is pointless. Hope this helped everyone.
