Forms of Sexual Tension

Hello everyone! Today I’m going to talk about different forms of sexual tension. A few months ago I did an online chat where I talked about adding emotion to your sex scenes. During the chat one of my side topics was sexual tension. Since then I have started a new manuscript where the sexual tension is thick enough to cut with a butter knife.

There are many ways to add sexual tension. I prefer to have my characters bickering. Now, I was once told that bickering isn’t something strong enough to build a plot on. That’s true, however using tha as a character trait is different.  Having a couple who have a major plot of why they can’t or won’t be together is your main concept but giving them a trait where when near each other they bicker, creating a friction between them. That friction can be just the beginning to passion.

That is just one way to create sexual tension. Some authors keep characters touching. A stroke of a hand down an arm will do it. Sometimes the gentle press of lips near flesh but never touching. And even a certain glance will create tension.

Adding an emotional element to any form of creating sexual tension will draw your readers deeper into the relationship. As a reader I know that what ties me to a character is how something effects that character emotionally. When that character is fighting with the other how does she feel? What are her hidden emotions? by bringing those hidden emotions to your readers they will connect your readers to your characters.

Those emotions can be presented in the smallest ways. Just a thought here or there. A slight sigh. A cuss. A blink. Those little actions can reveal emotions that are behind the sexual tension.

What are things you look for as a reader when it comes to tension, relationships, or traits?

thanks everyone.

Erotic Romance vs. Erotic. What’s the Difference?

Recently at my local Romance Writers of America’s meeting I explained the difference between erotica and erotic romance. Several members informed me that they’d never known there was a difference. That brings me to today’s post. Months back I expressed an interest in writing an inspirational novel about a woman losing her first love to drugs and him coming back clean as a preacher. At the time I got a lot of negative feedback because I was told there was no way I could write something so tame.  The thing most people don’t understand is that erotic romance and inspirational novels have one huge thing in common, emotions.

Both inspirational and erotic romance stories are based off of the emotions and feelings that drive the characters forward in the book. Inspirational writers must stop at a kiss, while erotic romance writers can let their characters do just about anything. While inspirational and erotic romance have that one base in common that’s how erotica differs. Erotica does not have to have any emotional involvement from the characters. In erotica the story is pushed forward by the physical and mental desire for sexual experience. I’m not saying that in order to write erotica that you can’t have a story line with a great plot but it’s not about the emotions in erotica. In this genre your characters are open to explore themselves, their sexuality, and others without having to have an emotional journey along with the sexual journey. Most times at the end of an erotic romance you get a happily ever after. At the end of an erotica you don’t. The heroine or hero does not need to be in a relationship, only the promise that the main character has found him or herself sexually and grown from the experience is required in erotica.

Before you classify your books please make sure you read the “rules” for each genre. If you are querying an erotic romance as an erotica you are hurting your chances of getting a yes from an agent or editor who is interested in erotic romance. That goes the other way too.

This week I’m on vacation and don’t have cell or internet service so I’ve posted this early and won’t be able to respond to comments until the weekend. If you ever have questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Asking is just one way we learn and in the competitive writing business we need all the knowledge we can get.

Also, my erotic romance UNTAMABLE has been scheduled for an early release. This story wasn’t supposed to be out until mid April but I’m very pleased to say that on February 23, 2011 you’ll be able to purchase UNTAMABLE at http://www.sirenpublishing.com/saydegrace/

Here’s my new cover as well as a bit of a teaser, in this one I hope you can feel the emotion behind these characters:

Jasper nodded. “All right, tell me she’s going to wake up any second and be perfectly fine.”

Doc grimaced. “I can’t tell you that, but be prepared for her to be back in heat when she does. She needs to complete the cycle.”

Damn it, that was not what Jasper wanted to hear, although her still being in heat would definitely be a good thing. He couldn’t wait to mount her.

Sidda wanted to roll her eyes. All he thought about was “mounting” her. For fuck’s sake, she’d almost been killed by Brockton’s dumb ass, and all Jasper wanted to do was mount her. “Is that all you think of?” Her croaking voice flowed through the room.

An instant later, a rush of footsteps had Jasper on one side of her bed and Doc on the other. She shook her head, biting back a groan of pain. Dammit, her head still hurt.

She opened her mouth to complain but stopped short when another figure appeared at the foot of the bed. Tears began to pour from her eyes. She slowly sat up, holding her hands out to Zeke, sobbing as he eased his way to her. “Oh my god.” She grasped Zeke’s hands, tugging him to her. Sidda’s breath caught in her chest. She’d been so sure she’d never see him again, yet here he was alive with her.

“What happened? I saw what Brockton…” She shook her aching head, holding onto him for dear life. He’d saved her from Brockton. “I thought…I…”

“Yeah, he beat me up pretty bad, but Stephan got there.” Zeke smiled. “He’s a good guy after all.”

Sidda forced a smile for her brother. Her hand trembled, burning from the mark on her palm. It looked like a small scratch, but the hum of energy from the spot told her it was more.

She cleared the thoughts of Stephan from her mind. “I can’t believe you’re all right.”

“Yeah, I’m gonna be fine. Your mate said if I didn’t get better, he’d be forced to beat me back to health.” Zeke laughed.

Sidda smiled at Jasper, releasing her brother’s hands to pull Jasper’s head toward her. She kissed his cheek, and he winked.

“Gross.” Zeke’s lips curled. “I should not know what you are feeling, or him. It’s disturbing. Come on, Doc, I want to take these rags off my forehead.”

Zeke and Doc slipped from the room. Sidda grinned at Jasper and pulled the covers back so he could slide into bed with her.

He tugged his pants and shoes off, followed by his shirt. “I should be mad at you for running off, not trusting me to handle the situation, and going into heat while I wasn’t there. I really should be pissed, but all I want to do is hold you. To make sure you’re safe and all right.” Jasper wrapped his arms around Sidda, dragging her close to him.

Sidda sighed with contentment. She’d been so scared when Brockton had come after her, but here in her mate’s arms, she was safe again. “Just hold me. Later we can fight. Right now I just want to hold you.” She yawned against his warm chest.

“Whatever you want, babe.” His hands stroked her back, sending her into a blissful sleep.

Thank you everyone! Remember that Jillian’s new book SURFER BRIDE is also being released early on February 22, my wonderful critque partner Rebecca Zanetti’s debut novel FATED is also being released that same day. Then the next day, February 23 is the release of UNTAMABLE.

Now go forth and be productive!

Dealing with Disappointments as an Author

Dealing with Disappointments as an Author

Every day in real life we are all faced with some sort of disappointment or challenge. In our writing lives this isn’t much different. Sometimes we hit the send button on a query letter thinking this is it, this query will be the one. Only a few days later disappointment fills us. I wish I could say that disappointment ends once you get that contract we all strive to get as writers.

As a reader I never imagined that writers go through so many ups and downs with bottomless pits filled with disappointment. But now, I have to say those damn pits suck!

Once I got my contract for my first novella I wondered if I’d be done dealing with the ups and downs and everything in between.  What I’ve found is that the bar of expectations is raised and now disappointments feel harsher.

On a whole I enjoy the writing process but there are times that I wonder what publishers are thinking. Sometimes it feels like you’re a cow being prodded through the chutes to slaughter. Right now everywhere I turn there seems to be a lot of negatives out there about the writing industry. I know for me, that I’m not as happy as I once was with the editing process and having no options at all when it comes to covers. From what I hear through the grapevine I’m not the only writer feeling this way.

Dealing with these feelings is so hard. I want to rant and rave about everything I’ve heard and seen lately but that’s not the thing to do. Even though we are mostly all grownups in the writing industry feelings get hurt easily. Words can be said in the heat of an argument that you can’t take back and then you may be “labeled” for the rest of your writing career.

Whenever I’m feeling disappointed and angry about writing I put those emotions into my characters. Maybe there is something that they are discontented about, maybe they can rant and rave for me.  So today while I’m writing I will be releasing pent up frustration and hopefully letting my characters grow.

How do you deal with the disappointments in writing or life?

Thanks all

A Time of Thanks

Hello everyone! So I can’t believe I forgot today was Tuesday! I’m going to set an alarm. But I had a rant I was going to share with you all about my brother but today I opted out of ranting. I’m writing on a book which I loved the first time I wrote it but no one else did. Now I love it even more and I can’t help but wonder if that means editors and agents will hate it twice as much this time or if it’ll pass. I’m not going to worry about it. Sometimes I get a little blue over projects that don’t go as well as I think they should but then I remember I’ve got two novella’s published and my editor is still wanting more. Then I sold a book which I thought I’d never sell. And then my editor emailed me and informed me that my latest novella is making it above the 50 mark in best sellers on two ebook sellers. It’s ranked 3 for books sold by The Wild Rose Press. I’m thrilled, and extremely thankful to all those who have helped me.

Another thing I’m thankful for, which I don’t say it enough, is my friends here on the blog. Liz was the first of the sizzlers that I met and I will always remember her intriguing me with her book. Then I spoke to Rita and Paula. Paula is probably the most patient person I know and you all have no idea how thankful I am about that as I’ve had her synopsis for nearly two months! Time issues coupled with computer meltdowns have slowed me down so much! Rita brought to the bunch order and a schedule! I love it. Then come in my lawyers. These ladies cracked me up from the get go with their love of men like Collin Firth and Alan Rickman. I’m so proud to say these ladies have had a great year too. And last but soooo not least I have to be especially thankful for Runere Mclain. This lady emails me out of the blue to encourage me or tell me how proud of me she is and I gotta say those emails make my day!

So I’m beyond thrilled today to thank all these ladies for being my friend. What is the theme song for the Golden Girls? Maybe that should play or better yet we can be Designing women. I want the tiara and the gun like Susan!

Ok so we need one more. Who wants to play Anthony?

Explicitly English Anyone?? Join Author Rachel Leigh for her Latest Release

Hello all!! Today I’m so blessed to have a fellow rose author with us. Rachel Leigh’s release Explicitly English released on Friday and I encourage everyone to go get a little explicity :). Comment on todays post and enter to win on Friday for my first release Riding Double and my new release The Harder They Buck(releases this FRIDAY!!).

So here we go, Rachel Leigh take it over!

It’s fun amidst the English countryside….

I am so happy to be here to share a brief time with you talking about my first erotic romance with The Wild Rose Press, entitled Explicitly English. As I live in the UK, I love writing about British settings and British people even though I write for the American market.

And the reason? Because I love the questions my US readers ask me! It’s as simple as that. I love the questions about how we live, where we live, our traditions, our royal family, the infamous writers from the past. It really gives me a fantastic warm feeling to know our two countries are so connected.

So when I came up with the idea for Explicitly English, I knew the hero would be a city stockbroker who chooses to live in a quaint English village at the weekends and holidays. Why? Because it immediately makes him interesting…and the heroine, his hired interior designer, can’t wait to find out a whole lot more about Mr. Stephen Cambridge!

Here’s an excerpt:

Right now, she had no man other than Mr. Steven Cambridge to seduce.  With her designs.  Laura narrowed her eyes. She would walk straight into the man’s gorgeous home with her head held high and her secret arsenal of designs tucked under her arm.  She was bloody good at her job – she knew it and he knew it.  They had been emailing back and forth for nearly two months.  If he had any intuition at all, he already knew how Laura thought and, if he was really good, he’d have a pretty good idea just how passionate she was about his home too.

The colors she used in her work and the fabrics she’d chosen reflected the emotions a client’s home ignited in her.  And Stephen Cambridge’s house ignited something absurdly sensual…and sexual.  Laura had never taken such pleasure in her work as she had designing the erotic, yet tasteful, plush yet daring concepts she’d created for his cottage.  Instead of maximizing the predictable ‘English country look,’ Laura’s instinct had been to make it a gateway to the age-old battle of chastity versus lust, propriety versus passion…

Nestled in a small picturesque village, consisting of honey-colored cottages and shops, surrounded by fields of endless green grass and forests seeped in history and legend, the cottage was like something plucked from a BBC drama.  Her heart picked up speed at the thought of escaping there for the next couple of days.  Or better still, for the rest of her life.  Mmm…tucked away with the man of her dreams and nothing more than sex to worry about.  Perfect.

My Inbox at 10:20pm

Hello everyone! Today I had planned on talking about finding my muse. The heifer had left  me for a while but all of a sudden she came back and I wrote 7k yesterday. I only lack two chapters before my novella is finished and ready for me to begin layering it and editing. I’m so excited about this because I’ve seriously struggled with this story. Nothing has been right but now I’m pretty happy.

And last night as I was trying to decide on whether to turn my computer off for the night or write some more I got a surprise! My second novella with The Wild Rose Press and their Scarlett Rose line was contracted a few months ago. I turned in my FINAL edits about two weeks ago and I’ve been waiting patiently for my release date and my cover. With RIDING DOUBLE I actually got my cover within weeks of the contract so I’ve been wondering where oh where is my new cover. Rebecca Zanetti(you know my critique partner) and I were emailing back and forth the other day and she even asked me where the heck is that cover?

I was getting worried. I mean here I am, done with ALL my edits and still don’t have a release date or a cover.  Just as I was getting anxious I got a very nice email last night at 10:20 pm. Wanna see what was in my inbox? Oh come on you know you do! Just say yes cause I’m gonna show you anyway!!

Isn’t it just pretty!! I’m so thrilled to share this for the first time ever here with you all.
