Closed for the Holidays

All right, so I’m not a scorge or anything, in fact I love Christmas but I hate it when places close early for the holidays. Mainly I hate it that agents, editors, and publishing houses close like a week in advance for the holiday season. Hey! I’m still writing here and waiting! All right, so I understand that they don’t want to start new material before they are closed for a few days. But this brings up a point to me. What is the proper amount of time to wait to her from a publisher?

At our monthly GCCRWA meeting this subject was brought up by a young lady who was waiting to hear back from an editor that she pitched to in March. Now, I pitched to the same editor and sent my material right then to her. I heard back from her on a short story in mid September. Two days ago I received an email from the same editor apologizing for her delay in getting my material back to me. I was like “What are you talking about?” turns out I’d sent her another story in September and she was sending me a “please submit more material but we pass on this ms.” rejection. So for this editor the first time frame from submission to rejection was about five months. The second time was about three months. I like how her time frame is going down.

And just this past week I received a letter in the mail from an agent that I’ve queried many, many, many times. I hadn’t remembered I’d sent her anything either. Which I had sent her the partial back in August. She apologized for the delay, saying that it had gotten lost on her desk. I’ve seen the work load this agent has and completely understand. Again this was a rejection but the personal hand written note was very appreciated. Her time frame:about four months.

Now for another editor, I sent a story to one editor after nationals in July. I emailed said editor to ask if she would like the partial via email or mail. This editor is in Canada so I figured she’d want to do email. NOPE. And she warned me that with taking over her new position that she was swamped and I wouldn’t hear back from her until December. Thats six months! Oh well. But its December and they are closed for the holidays and still no word from her.

I hate emailing agents and editors to ask if they’ve read my material yet. I feel like its tacky and makes me look needy. But at the same time if their website says that an author will hear back from them in three months shouldn’t I go with that and expect them to also? I just don’t know. What would you do? Would you begin emailing away at three months or let it ride and see when you receive answers?

Jeez, I almost forgot!

Hello everyone! Jeez, my brain is going a hundred miles an hour! I almost forgot today was my day to blog here! I was sitting here going over guest bloggers that I’ve invited and it hit me “Today is TUESDAY SAYDE!!” Opps.

So this past week my husband has been on vacation. What does that mean? No writing. Seriously I have not written in 9 days! The world is still spinning though so it must be all right. But while I was not writing I managed to help start a new group blog I’ve joined. It will be 14 authors who write all about cowboys and their wild and wicked ways! I’m excited about it! I’ll let everyone know the details later when we’ve got it all ironed out.

And while I was not writing I had a release, The Harder They Buck came out and today I got my first review back. To see it go here, Also I got word that my free read which leads into a whole new series I have been toying with was accepted by All Romance Ebooks as a free read for their newsletter and their website. I’m excited about this because I’ve been wanting to get a free read out there and well now I have.

And one more thing that I’ve done while not writing? I made book trailers!! Most of you know by now if you’re ever read any one of my posts that my critique partner is Rebecca Zanetti, author extraordinaire :). Well what you may not know, and yes I’m telling secrets here, Rebecca is a clicker! When she gets bored or wants to avoid something she starts clicking away redoing her website, blog, etc. I always know when she’s avoiding writing because I’ll get emails that say “Hey, look at my website, or Hey, check this out” Lol, I love it, she cracks me up and she always does a great job with her sites and then she ends up nailing the writing she’s avoided! Makes me a bit jealous!

Well this week she did it all! She messed around so much that she inspired me to make book trailers as that was one thing she clicked away on! I’m adding her trailer on this post as well since it’s what inspired me to do mine. Don’t forget that you can already pre-order Fated! It’s so worth it to have it shipped to you as soon as it releases! I’m pre ordering mine! And as always The Harder They Buck is always around if you want something steamy 🙂

Tuesday’s Industry News: Writing Sucks

Hello all! I hope everyone is doing well this chilly morning. I love cold weather so I’m doing great! First let me remind all our readers to head over to to vote for our wonderful Runere. Second, writing sucks!! Well, not really but… I had a very bad writing week last week.Rejection after rejection showed up in my inbox for one of my paranormal suspense. Not one said the same thing though, and it left me very confused. Especially when all of them had very harsh words but asked to see other titles I had. WHAT??? So by Friday I was done, cooked and ready to serve. I imagine we all get very discouraged sometimes in our writing careers and last week was my week to pout.

I had no desire at all to write anything by Friday. I wanted to stop completely and take a break, which is not like me at all. Usually when I get discouraged I open up a project that is in a different genre and work on it for a change. Not this time. However I had my local RWA meeting on Saturday(and yes, I tried to bail) which turned things around. Runere presented our group with some great information on ghost hunting, ghosts, voodoo, and native american beliefs. These were topics that I’d been playing around with in a rewrite on a project so I was so excited by the time we left the meeting. Then after laughing at SFCatty for bringing her life size standup of professor Snape to the meeting she sent me this, stating that she was sure I’d take one. So she was right! I’d take one in a heartbeat!! And to top it off with my wonderful critique partner Rebecca Zanetti gave me her platform building theory and I was in it. All in all just when I think being a writing and writing sucks, I’m reminded by good friends and great information that neither is true.

What do you do when you get the writing blues?? Oh and The Harder They Buck, the second book in my Cowgirl Tough Series, will be released on October 22, 2010!!
