Moonday’s Heroic Hunk in History: Atlas Emerging

Atlas Emerging

What a treat today!!  Michelangelo’s famous sculpture of David was placed in The Gallery of the Accademia di Belle Arti in 1873. The gallery’s collection of Michelangelo’s work also includes his four unfinished Prisoners, intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II.  Unfortunately, when I visited there they didn’t allow pictures; however, pics are now in the public domain.  These magnificent sculptures are examples of Michelangelo’s claim that sculptures already exist in the stone and that the role of the sculptor is to free them.  Today, features Atlas who supported the weight of the world on his HEROIC shoulders.  In mythology, Atlas was a second generation Titan—a race of gods who preceded the well-known Greek deities.  Next Week, a Wonder of the World, then back to those heroic Prisoners. Rita Bay

  1. NICE muscles. I can see how he could hold up the world!

  2. It certainly looks as if he’s emerging from the stone itself, so much so I feel Michelangelo’s perception was correct!

    What a gorgeous masculine form!
