Tuesday’s Industry News

Hello everyone. Many of you know that my brother is in ICU and has been for a few days now. I had planned an interesting post but sorry everyone, today is going to be short and sweet.

Growing Trends is my topic today. Now I don’t mean growing trends among readers or whats hot on the market right now. Instead I’m talking about growing trends in the traditional print world. Recently there has been a  number of publishing houses that “seem” to be lowering the amount of books contracted from well established(not NY BS’s) authors. Why? Well from the research I’ve done the publishing houses doing this are simply getting more bang for their buck. How are they doing this? By offering contracts to debut authors for smaller advances instead of contracting established authors with larger advances.

A few years ago publishing houses, even the smaller ones, were offering between 10k-15k for debut author advances. Now they are offering between 4k-10k(not to say some lucky people don’t get six figure deals). So instead of buying one book from a well established author for an advance on the low end of 15k going much higher publishers can now offer 4k to a debut author. This way those publishers can buy three books from an author for nearly the same price as the one book from the other author.

Is this fair? Is this a good thing?

To me this is out sourcing. I’d love to get a contract for a traditional print book but at what cost? What do you think of this growing trend?

Onto brighter things. The sizzlers have been into the historical men lately and well not to be left out here is my historical man.

Spartacus, Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield   Who cleans up very nice. He has recently been diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

  1. And what a lovely example of a historical man he is. Crucifixion, though, was a horrific end for Spartacus. Sorry to read the actor is ill. RitaVF

  2. Glad you took the time to blog today although I wouldn’t have blamed you if you didn’t- you have a lot going on and a lot on your mind. Prayers sent.

But, since you DID blog, I have to say- He’s very nice! Love the abs and pecs. Sorry to hear he’s not well but that is one cancer that CAN be beaten!

  3. The Sizzlers have your back, Cowgirl.Praying for your brother, you and the doctors’ skills.

Very thought provoking post, Sayde. Makes you wonder if it’s a glimmer of hope for unpubbeds—or if they’re furtunate enough to build a solid readership platform, a future lack of monetary recognition. Thought provoking, indeed.

Good thing you had Andy handy to help take away the sting! He’s definately a hunk! Hope things turn out well for him.

  4. Glad to see you back for a bit, Sayde. Sending well wishes and prayers out to you and your family.

Interesting post today. I’m not sure how I feel about it, to be honest. I don’t know whether it’s a bad thing or not, but I would think getting your books to readers would be the start of a lucrative career (money notwithstanding). Hm, I’ll have to think about this when those publishing houses start fighting over my books (yeah right!).

    Gorgeous man, btw. Hubba-hubba woo-hoo
